It depends on where you get your book. If you buy via iBook then you are limited to the iPad. If you buy via the Kindle bookstore then you can read it on your iPad, your iPhone, your PC, your Mac, and obviously on a Kindle reader as well.

Like others have said, it depends. If you bought it through the Apple store then you'll be violating copyrights. Certain books for other readers (Kindle, Nook, etc.) can be stored on your PC and shared from there, although I don't know if there are rules against that…

If you get them through MyPadMedia (one time fee for unlimited downloads) I'm pretty sure you can share them.
